I have been tracing my family history on & off for a number of years now. To date I have around 2000 names in my database and around half of those are available to see online. The research for my own family is mainly based in 2 geographic areas, Banffshire in the NE of Scotland and the Shetland Isles to the N of Scotland. My wife's ancestors were mainly from the Edinburgh area and Perthshire.
My paternal ancestors were all Shetlanders, mostly crofters, fisherman & seaman. Some were whalers who may have sailed on the whaling ships of Aberdeen, Peterhead & Hull. Shetland life was hard and many people emigrated abroad. I have traced some one branch to New Zealand and others will no doubt follow.
One the maternal side my ancestors were mainly from Banffshire with a few from the Highlands and one from Ireland. Many were agricultural people, farmers, carters, labourers & journeymen. I have yet to establish the reasons for the movements of families from Inverness & Tain to Banffshire let alone from West Meath in Ireland.
