Richard Lochhead is the 26/27 year old candidate for the new Gordon constituency. His age does seem to be in some doubt depending on which flyer is read.
Regardless of his age, there is no disputing the facts that Richard started out as an accountant working for SSEB, before going on to complete an Honours degree in Politics at Stirling University, graduating in 1994. Following joining the SNP, Richard worked his way up to become his party's spokesman for Transport and Environment, before being promoted to Peterhead Office Manager and Secretary to the leader of the SNP, Alex Salmond MP.
Having recently won a scholarship to study European nations, Richard had the chance to follow his passion for travel, visiting Denmark and Belgium and has returned determined to see Scotland become as strong as many of the other European countries. He now hopes that he can play a part in building a new, prosperous country which has her own independence and democracy, and is ready to face the 21st century.
A local idol and role model to countless Gordon youngsters has recently signed up for the SNP. Alan Cameron, former Ellon Academy rector has been described by Richard Lochhead as "a talented figure who cares deeply for the future of Scottish Education."?!!
A recent opinion poll has found that 52% of 18-25 year olds support independence for Scotland.
Results of the Ellon Academy and Tarves primary school elections among pupils aged 10 - 18 supported this view.
Richard Lochhead believes that this is why the fight for the Gordon seat is being run between the SNP and the Tories.
Votes for the SNP have increased by 50% in the last General Election for the old 'Gordon' seat. The party also won most votes in successive, 1994 and 1995, elections.
SNP have consistently out-polled both the Tories and Labour in all national elections since the last General Election.
