Computers and Homework

Although not an essential addition to the household, a computer can be helpful in motivating your children when it come to doing homework.  Here are some simple suggestions about how a computer might help.

Although there are many specialized programs and software just for school subjects, the software that comes bundled with your machine can be used to assist with homework.

Word Processing
This can be used by pupils  S1 and S2 to type up essays or book reports for English and in later years to prepare projects and investigations for Geography, Computing Studies, Modern Studies and Art.  A word processing program can also be used by children to to practice their keyboarding skills.

Spreadsheet
Can be used for making up tables for recording the results of experiments in Science, questionnaires in Modern Studies and performance statistics in PE.
Using the spreadsheet package, it is a simple matter to produce graphs and charts to illustrate the results.
You can even transfer  the tables and charts to your word processed report and then print it out.

CD-ROMs
Multimedia CD Roms provide a stimulating and entertaining method of finding out information for many homework activities for lots of school subjects.  Of particular use are multimedia encyclopedias like Encarta and Grolier.  These are also great for improving the general knowledge of your children.

Specialized Software
You can also buy specialized software to help your child with subject content.  Drill and practice programs are very popular in helping with Mathematics and topics in History and Geography.
When preparing  for S Grade and H Grade, there are many programs which provide valuable examination revision activities.
