J J was a contestant of "Stars in their Eyes" where he imitated Brad Roberts, the lead singer from the band "The Crash Test Dummies". ![]() It's Stars in their Eyes date October 1995. J J, inspired by his mother, decided to call the after show hot line and register his application to appear on the show. This was later followed up with an application form and demo tape which formally launched him into the selection process. |
The selection cut the number of applications from 75,000 to 12,000 to 800 (first interview) to 90 (2nd interview) to 45 people appearing that series. A representative from Stars in their Eyes called for J J at the Post Office while he was out on his rounds. They told his colleagues that he had been selected to appear on the show and boy did they have some surprises set up for J J by the time he returned to the office. |

There followed a number of trips to London and Manchester to get the wig and costume fitted and to rehearse the act. Lastly, in the few days leading up to the show, there were a few days of final rehearsals. The show was recorded in Manchester on the 15th March 1996 and broadcast to the nation on the 30th March 1996 (six months after the original application). |

There are five contestants on each show which means that four others accompanied J J that day ... they were David Bowie, Tommy Steele, Mary Hopkins, and Celine Dione (who won that particular show). |
All the contestants had the opportunity to meet Matthew Kelly before the show - in fact he was in on the rehearsals. J J found him to be very friendly although he admitted that, while he wasn't nervous about the actual performance, he was very nervous about the "chit chat" portion of the show - you know, the bit after you walk on stage but before you transform into character for the performance. What made it for J J was the enjoyment and experience of performing to a large audience, and of course the 5-Star Treatment. |

| All through the lead up to the show J J received alot of praise and support from the local community in Stonehaven. And after the show, J J received a letter from the real Brad Roberts. J J's sister Elaine had sent Brad a video of the show and Brad had handwritten a letter in response complimenting J J on his performance. | ||
